Homebirth in Australia is an option available to most women. Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (Australia's Mothers and Babies 2011) figures show there are about 1267 planned homebirths in Australia. Most women choosing a homebirth hire an independent midwife to provide one-to-one medical care. In Melbourne, there are also two programs available through publically-funded hospital programs (Casey Hospital and Sunshine Hospital) providing free homebirth supported by a small group of midwives working in the program.
