                      Welcome to Connected Journey
                      Doula and Counselling Service

My name is Melissa Russell and I am a doula/birth attendant, breastfeeding educator/counsellor and social worker.
I offer a range of professional services for pregnancy, birth and parenthood including doula support, childbirth education, workshops
and groups, birth debriefing and birth pool hire.
I am located in Berwick and service Melbourne (including the Dandenong Ranges) as well as the Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and Gippsland regions.

The journey of parenthood is time of profound transition, whether you are at the beginning of this journey or have been travelling this path for many years. Throughout this process we need to trust our instincts and utilise our inner knowledge as this can become lost in a mountain of choices and information we have access to. Often we travel this path without much thought, but periodically we have the desire to seek out a new path and create a new journey for ourselves. Connecting with this journey opens new possibilities for personal growth and a clearer understanding of ourselves.

So, if you are looking for education or information, continuous support during your pregnancy, birth and postnatal period, birth de-briefing, or to simply hire a birth pool... finding the right support during this time can make a significant difference to your experience.

"Birth is not only about making babies.  Birth is about making mothers - strong, confident, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength" - Barbara Katz Rothman

How can a doula support you?

A doula is a woman who is trained and experienced in childbirth who provides continuous emotional, physical and informational support during pregnancy, birth and throughout the early weeks of parenthood.

Studies* show that when doulas attend births; labours are shorter, women have fewer interventions and mothers feel more satisfied with their birth experience.  Statistics include a:

                      > 50% reduction in caesarean rate
                      > 25% shorter labour
                      > 60% reduction in epidural requests
                      > 40% reduction in oxytocin use (induction of labour)
                      > 30% reduction in analgesia use
                      > 40% reduction in forceps delivery
                      > improved breastfeeding
                      > decreased incidence of postnatal depression
                      > greater maternal satisfaction
                      > better mother-infant interaction

                      New research about doulas
"Continuous support from a person who is present solely to provide support, is not a member of the woman's social network, is experienced in providing labour support, and has at least a modest amount of training, appears to be most beneficial"... to read more click here

"The new review, published in The Cochrane Library, looked at how each type of monitoring affected women admitted to the hospital in labor with low-risk pregnancies and found there was no benefit of using the CTG at admission.
